OAKLEY - Melvin H. "Bud" Brandon, 88, of Oakley, IL, died 12:00 midnight, Sunday, November 29, 2009, at his residence. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, IL, with visitation 6 to 8 P.M., Friday, December 4, 2009, at the funeral home. Burial will be in LaPlace Cemetery, LaPlace, IL. Melvin was born September 30, 1921, in Fountain Run, KY, the son of Henry Edward and Nettie Jane (Robinson) Brandon. His descendents were from Ireland and he is the last to carry the surname "Brandon". Melvin retired as a weigh master from Staley's, after 38 years of service. He operated Eldorado Inn, Kenney Tap in Kenney, IL, Escape, Bud's A-Frame Lounge, Green Street Lounge and Bud's Hill Billy Lounge. He participated in golden glove tournaments as a young man, enjoyed motorcycling, helped form the first motorcycle club in Decatur and was one of the oldest Harley riders in Decatur. In the 1950's, he was an ambulance and funeral coach driver for Brintlinger's Funeral Home. Melvin enjoyed raising cattle as a hobby. He was a member of the V.F.W. and Staley Retirees Club. He proudly served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific and Phillipines from September 3, 1942 until June 29, 1945 during WWII on the USS Cowanesque. He joined the United States Navy Reserve from January 14, 1948 to December 23, 1952. He is survived by his daughter Carol A. Brandon of Decatur, IL; adopted son Kevin Brandon of Decatur, IL; grandchildren Greg Dart of Chicago, IL, Tara Irons of Springfield, IL; great grandchildren Jaelyne Irons of Decatur, IL, Tayler Irons and Mya Page, both of Springfield, IL; nephews Robert Taylor, Mike Borders, John Borders; nieces Marilyn Walker, Sharon Moran, Sue Ann Powell; 4 great nephews and 5 great nieces, 6 great great nieces, 3 great great nephew, and 1 great great great niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kermit Brandon, sisters Olene Good and Edith Borders. The family would like to give a special thank you to his great great nephew Blake West for his kindness and caring support during Bud's later years.
