W. W. Lackey was born in Burleson County to pioneers Martha Ghent and Rev. W. S. Lackey. He graduated from Simmons Collins in 1905 and received a Master of Arts from the University of Texas. He served as Superintendent of Schools in Midland, Texas for 35 years, retiring in 1941. In 1937, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Hardin-Simmons University. He was a noted Latin scholar and teacher. He served his church, First Baptist Midland, as choir director. He was an author and poet.
He was survived by a sister, Mrs. A. B. Duckworth of Ft. Worth with whom he made his home in his later years. He never married.
