Paul Ashby Black was born in Baldwin City, Kansas in 1895, the third child of Harry James Black and Eva Jane ASHBY Black. He was raised on a farm in Kansas until the age of ten when his family moved to Colorado. Paul graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a soldier, during WWI, when he contracted influenza and spent time in a hospital in Colorado. There he met a lovely nurse named Frances who became his wife. Paul Ashby Black and Frances W. DODSON were married on May 22, 1921 in Santa Ana, Orange County, California at the home of his parents. Paul and Frances had three children: Olive Jeannette, Eleanor Jane and Robert Dodson, all born in California. Paul was in various occupations over the years. He was a poultry farmer and an owner of an auto mechanics shop for nine years. By 1939, he was a student at UC Berkeley. He taught Auto Mechanics, Science and Math at Anaheim High School. When Paul and Frances' third grandchild was born in Alaska, they ventured north to meet her and ended up staying for more than twenty-five years! Paul's employment in Alaska was as a civilian auto mechanic on Elmendorf Air Force Base. Paul enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables, writing poetry and exploring Alaska. He was known by his family to be a "rock hound" and a "jack of all trades". Paul and Frances left Alaska, which they dearly loved, in 1973, to be near their son, daughter-in-law, and second daughter in California. The Blacks had twelve grandchildren, several step grandchildren and more than thirty great grandchildren.
