Birth: 1801
North Carolina, USA
Death: 1890
Claiborne County
Tennessee, USA

Garrett Neal Bryant was born about 1801 in North Carolina. His parents are unknown but the 1880 US Census tells us that his father was born in North Carolina and his mother in Virginia.

About 1825 Garrett married Sarah "Sally" Stanton (1808- aft 1870) in North Carolina. By 1830 they had migrated to Claiborne Co., Tennessee. The censuses for 1850, 1860 and 1870 all show Garrett, wife Sally and their children living in Claiborne.

Garrett and Sally were married for at least 45 years and had nine known children. In order of their birth they were Mary Bryant (1826-1865), Rebecca Elizabeth Bryant (1830-1895), Lawson Bryant (1834-aft 1880), Matilda Hale "Tildy" Bryant (1837-1891), Octavia L. Bryant (1840-1886), Sonville Powell Bryant (1843-1915), James Bryant (1846- ?) and Orlena Bryant (1849- ?). First born Mary was born in North Carolina. Her siblings were all born in Claiborne Co., TN.

The 1880 US Census shows Garrett, age 79, as "divorced" with two of his daughters (Octavia and Orlena) living with him in Claiborne Co, TN. Ex-wife Sally, who would have been 72, is presumed to still be living in 1880 but her residence at that time is currently unknown.

Garrett does not appear in the 1900 census and is thought to have died about 1890 in Claiborne Co., TN. His burial site is in that county but currently unknown.
