Marvin Marcus Boyles was born on Mar. 7, 1880 in Randolph Co., North Carolina. Named after his father, he was the son of Rev. Marcus Wrightman Boyles (1842-1892) and Susannah Alice "Susan" Wood (1846-1895).

Both of Marvin's parents were born in Lincoln Co., NC and both died in Lexington, Davidson Co., NC. They are buried in the Lexington City Cemetery.

Marvin's paternal grandparents were Rev. Josiah Adolphus Boyles (1816-1894) and Anna Elizabeth "Annie" Yount (1819-1905). Both were born in Lincoln Co., NC and both died in Burke Co., NC. They are buried in the Salem Methodist Church Cemetery in Morganton, Burke Co., NC.

Marvin's father and paternal grandfather both fought in the Civil War. His father, Marcus, and paternal great-grandfather, Rev. John Boyles II, were both Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) preachers.

Marvin's maternal grandparents were John Henry Wood (1810-1891) and Elizabeth Catherine "Katie" Bess (1818-1900). Both were born in Lincoln Co., NC and spent their entire lives there. They are buried in the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Morganton, Lincoln Co., NC.

On June 3, 1914 Marvin married Mamie B. Hightower (1887-1983) in Guilford Co., NC. Marvin was 34 years old when they married. Mamie was 27. Born in North Carolina, she was the daughter of William Daniel Hightower (1844-1925) and Elizabeth Frances "Fannie" Burton (1854-1941), both born in Caswell Co., NC.

Marvin died on Oct. 27, 1854 in Greensboro, NC at the age of 74. He was buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro, NC. At the time of his death Marvin and Mamie had been married for 40 years.

Mamie lived to be 96 years of age. She died on Aug. 11, 1983 in Charlotte, NC and she too, was buried in the Lexington City Cemetery.
