Birth: Oct., 1862

North Carolina, USA
Death: Feb. 8, 1914
Wake County
North Carolina, USA

Anna Eliza "Annie" (Coggin) Boyles was born in October of 1862 in Montgomery Co., North Carolina. She was the daughter of Burwell Titus "Burrel" Coggin, Jr. (1814-1885) and Cirona Harris (1836-1873). Both of her parents lived their entire lives in Montgomery Co., NC. They are buried in the Coggin Family Cemetery located in that same county.

Annie's father, Burrel, was the son of Burwell Titus "Burrel" Coggin, Sr. (1768-1814) and Letha "Lethy" Tucker (1773-1847). Burrel Sr. was born in Montgmery Co., NC, Lethy in Virginia. Both died in Montgomery Co., NC. They too, are buried in the Coggin Family Cemetery.

Annie's mother, Cirona, was the daughter of Parsons Benjamin Harris Sr. (1808-1868) and Abigail Ingram (1818-1875). Both were born in Montgomery Co., NC. Their grave sites are unknown but are thought to be in their birth county.

In 1890 Annie married Augustus Clingman "A.C." Boyles (1867-1936) in Eldorado, Montgomery Co., NC. Although Annie was 28 she had not been previously married. AC, who was five years younger at 23, was born in Laurel Hill, Lincoln Co., NC. He was the son of Rev. Marcus Wrightman Boyles (1842-1892) and Susan A. Wood (1846-1895). AC's father, Marcus, and great-grandfather, John Boyles II (1768-1843), had been "old-time" Methodist Episcopal preachers.

Annie and A.C. were married for about 24 years and had four known children. They were Henry Paul Boyles (1891-1910), Burrel Clarence "B. C." Boyles (1894-1989), William Marcus Boyles (1897-1965) and Augustus Clingman "Gus" Boyles Jr. (1903-1965). All were born in North Carolina.

Annie and AC's first born son, Henry Paul Boyles, died from scarlet fever in 1910 while a student at Trinity College (now Duke University). He was just 19. Annie took her son's death extremely hard and never truly recovered. She developed severe depression and eventually had to enter the Dorothy Dix Hospital (1913) in Raleigh, NC where she died on July 8, 1914 at the age of 51. Annie was buried in the Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, Durham Co., NC close to her son, Henry.

AC, having first lost his son, then having to battle his beloved wife's depression and eventually losing her as well, was understandably despondent. Not long afterwards he left his medical practice in North Carolina and tried full-time farming in Florida. Although he was just 46 when Annie died, he remained unmarried for over a decade before finally marrying widower, Mamie G. Tracy White (1869-1945). About 1929, at the encouragement of his wife he returned to the medical field. They moved to Mt. Airy, North Carolina where AC resumed his medical practice as a contract doctor with the local granite companies.

AC died of a massive heart attack on Jan. 28, 1936 in Oak Grove, Surry Co., NC at the age of 68. At the time he and his eight year old daughter, Dorothy, were tending to some animals in their barn.

AC was buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC, next to his first wife, Annie, and near his first born son, Henry. His youngest son, Gus, who never married, was buried near his parents in 1965.
