|Birth: ||Feb. 12, 1799|
SARAH JANE 'SALLY' FRENCH was born in Russell County, (Adair County) Kentucky; married JOSIAH CLIFTON in 1819 in Adair County. They were living in Casey County, which is adjacent to Adair County in 1820 (census record) and had a infant daughter (Dinah). They moved to Macon County, Illinois with her parents and with some of the Cliftons and their families. SALLY is the daughter of JOHN FRENCH and wife, DOLLY SPENCER. SALLY CLIFTON died circa 1865 either in Iowa; Missouri, where they stopped for a while; or in Texas. JOSIAH remarried in 1868 in Lavaca County, Texas to ROSINA CONWAY.
CHILDREN OF SALLY AND JOSIAH are listed under JOSIAH CLIFTON MEMORIAL.
SALLY'S father, JOHN FRENCH, was born 2 Nov 1760 in Virginia British Colony that later became Rockingham County, Virginia. He married DOLLY SPENCER on 24 Mar 1785 in Bedford County, Virginia. She is the daughter of WILLIAM SPENCER and wife, MARY. JOHN is the son of DANIEL FRENCH and wife, MILDRED STROTHER. JOHN died 17 Feb 1844 and DOLLY died 11 Dec 1844 both in DeWitt County, Illinois; both buried in McGraw Cemetery, Clinton, Illinois.
JOHN FRENCH was a Private in the Virginia Militia in Bedford County, Virginia during the American Revolution, guarding lead mines keeping the Tories and American Indians from having access to them. He did five tours of duty. His pension application papers are under #3795 and can be found under Southern Campaign American Revolution Pension Statements on the internet. He was denied a pension stating that he could not produce his discharge paper but that doesn't mean he didn't serve. Militia rosters in Virginia are practically nonexistent. Some others lost theirs or never received it, also. At the time, if they received the discharge papers, it didn't seem all that important to protect it. They were just trying to make a new life in a new nation never dreaming that the government would, some day, give them a pension for their service during the revolution.
JOHN FRENCH is established with the NATIONAL SOCIETY, SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (SAR Membership Number 97974). Original data: SAR Membership Applications, 1889-1970, Louisville, Kentucky; NSSAR Microfilm, 508 rolls.
