Keatchie, LA--Funeral services for Willie Mae Caskey Alexander, 85, will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, July 29, 2002 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Ron McLellan, pastor of Gloster Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, LA.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, July 28, 2002 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Alexander was born December 5, 1916 in Bienville, LA and passed away Friday, July 26, 2002 in Keatchie, LA where she resided for the past year and a half. She graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1935. After graduation, she taught school in Bryceland, LA and then worked for the Louisiana Department of Welfare for a number of years. During this time she worked with families after the Depression, relocating them to more prosperous states and teaching them new skills to make a living. While she was furthering her education at Louisiana State University, she worked as a social worker at the Baton Rouge Guidance Center. In 1954, she joined the faculty as a professor in the School of Social Work at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, where she retired after 26 years of loyal service. She was an inspiration to many students as well as all those who knew her. She was a member of Gloster Baptist Church.
Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her husband, William Harrell Alexander, Sr.; son, William Harrell "Bill" Alexander, Jr.; parents, Mattie Lou Ford Caskey and Floyd Caskey and sisters, Jonnie Lucille Caskey, Ernestine Caskey Davidson and Floy Lavon Caskey Dunn.
She leaves to cherish her memori, her sister, Beverly Caskey Meeks and husband, Martin meeks, Sr.; nephews, William "Bill" Meeks, Martin "Marty" Meeks; great niece, Elizabeth Mae "Emma" Meeks; niece, Kathy Meeks Papathopoulos and husband, Stephen; great nieces, Alex and Katina Papathopoulos; niece, Linda Davidson; great nephew, Chris Davidson; nephew, Lane Davidson and wife, Trish; great nephews, Jeff Davidson and Brian Davidson; nephew Dickie Davidson and wife, Carol; great niece, Kristy Davidson; great nephews, John and Charlie Davidson; niece, Geneal Smelley Brummett, great niece, Valarie Brummett; niece Jean Dunn McDonald and husband, Rev. John McDonald, Sr.; great niece, Angela Ely and husband, Ron; great nephew, John McDonald, Jr. and wife Molly; niece, Frances Dunn Davison and husband, Ross; great nephew, Richard Davison; niece, Floy Dunn Hebert and husband, Mark; great nephews, Mark "Beau" Hebert, Jr., Chris Hebert and Drew Hebert; nephew, Eugene "Bubba" Dunn and wife, Sheila; great nephews, Spencer Dunn and Eric Yawn; great niece, Rachal Dunn and several great-great nieces and nephews, many other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dr. James F. Hudson, Mike Kennington, David Means, III, Gary Evans, David Burford, Hall Burford, Charles T. "Chuck" Hennigan, Jr. and Ashton Long.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Danita Larson, Jane Johnson, Sarah Arnold, Bob Arnold, Betty Ann Stephenson, Myrtle Stephenson, Juanita Brown and Donna Yates for their loving care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the LSU Foundation for the Professor Willie Mae Alexander Memorial Scholarship, LOD Cook Alumni Center, 3838 West Lakeshore Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70814, or to the Gloster Baptist Church Building Fund, the Baptist Children's Home or to the charity of the donor's choice.
