Decatur County Journal
Thursday, October 2, 1913.
FREDERICK LEWIS GITHENS was born in Jewell County, Kansas, on the 27th day of April, 1886, and passed from this life to the life beyond at about 4:00 o clock in the morning of the 23rd of September, 1913, being 28 years, 4 months and 26 days old. The end came peacefully, after years of patient endurance and after weeks of excruciating agony..
FRED was the fourth of nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. FRANK GITHENS, five of whom had gone on before his summons came. He had never been a rugged child, although in his early life he had enjoyed all the privileges of normal children. About twelve years ago his health began to fail and slowly but certainly his minor ailments developed into the one awful disease pulmonary tuberculosis, and for about six years he had been afflicted with the great white plague. He spent nearly three years traveling from one
locality to another in a search for health but in every attempt he was disappointed. Three years ago he came home and in Davis City he had remained ever since..
FRED's early childhood was spent in Kansas, the family moving to Decatur County, Iowa in 1891, and ever since that with the exception of the period when he was away seeking health, he has been a resident of this locality..
He was a good boy, a staunch friend, true and honest in all his dealings.
During the years of his illness he bore everything unflinchingly as a real man. His patience and fortitude were remarkable and not until a few hours before his departure did he give up the great struggle with the enemy of his life. He was not afraid of death -- he was prepared and ready to die. His peace with God is made..
There are left to mourn his death besides the parents, three brothers, CALVIN, of Seattle, Wash.; CLARENCE, of Decatur and RALPH. Besides these there are many relatives and friends whose sympathy goes out to this bereaved family..
The funeral services were held from the house in Davis City on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 24, at 2:00 o'clock, the services conducted by E.A. Place, Pastor of the M.E. Church. The remains were laid away in the Odd Fellows'
