Moscow- Melvin Alsager, 62 died Saturday at 8 p.m. at his Moscow home. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
A Moscow lawyer for the past 32 years, Alsager served as lawyer for the past 32 years, Alsager served as Latah County prosecutor for one term beginning in 1952 and was past president of the Latah County Bar Association. He also served as justice of the peace in the 1960's
He was born Jan.3, 1918 at Spokane to Gerta and Sven Alsager. He lived in Latah County all his life and graduated from the Potlatch High School in 1936. He received his baccalaureate degree in 1942 and a law degree in 1950 from the University of Idaho at Moscow.
Alsager made an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the Idaho House of Representatives in 1956 and 1962.
He served in the Navy in the Pacific theater from 1942 to 1946 during World War II.
He married Cecilia Walsh at Moscow on Nov. 17, 1945.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Idaho and Latch County bar associations the Moose Lodge, the Elks Temple and the 40 and 8 Club, and affiliate of the American Legion. He served as past department commander of the American Legion and was a member of the organization's national Executive Committee. He was a past president of the Latah County Historical Society.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Moscow.
Survivors include his wife at the Moscow home. A daughter, Mary Margaret Alsager of San Jose, and a son, John Alsager of Genesee.
A memorial mass will be said Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
