William Richardson Chapline was born March 6, 1820 near Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland. He was the son of James Nourse Chapline (1796-1830) and Catherine "Kate" Hebb Chapline (1796-1864). He was the grandson of Jeremiah Chapline and Elizabeth Nourse Chapline. The town of Sharpsburg was founded by his great grandfather, Joseph Chapline in 1763.

On 14 Sept 1842 William Chapline married Margaret Ann Hout (1825-1885) of Shepherdstown, (West) Virginia. They had eight children: Charles Edgar Chapline (1845-1853); William Rufus Chapline (1847-1867); John Nourse Chapline (1848-1909); Anzannetta "Annie" Stipp (1851-1928); Sarah Staley (1853-1942); Ida Virginia Rogers (1856-1932); Lillian Conklyn (1863-1933); Charles Luther Chapline (1865- ?). Grave locations for Charles Edgar, William Rufus, and Charles Luther Chapline are not accounted for.

The William and Margaret Ann Chapline lived at 206 West New Street in Shepherdstown, W.V.

William R. Chapline was a canal boat captain on the C&O Canal. In 1852 he owned a 90 foot long boat called "Angemitten" capable of carrying more than 100 tons of cargo. An article in the May 14, 1870 edition of The Shepherdstown Register reported that the canal boat "Wandering Boy," was struck by another boat in dense fog and sunk in about 15 feet of water near "Big Pool." Captain Chapline and his son, who were asleep at the time, narrowly escaped from the "Wandering Boy," as water rushed through the cabin door and windows. Canal records show that in 1877 and 1878 Capt. Chapline used a canal boat named "Fannie & Estella" moving coal from Cumberland, Md. to Georgetown D.C. The October 22, 1880 issue of The Cumberland Times showed the departure by Capt. Chapline from Cumberland with over 109 tons of coal on the boat C.W. Osborne.

William's wife Margaret died on September 3, 1885 in Shepherdstown, W.V. at the age of sixty. William R. Chapline died on December 16, 1899 at age 79.

Obituary of William Richardson Chapline, Shepherdstown Register, Thursday, December 21, 1899, page 3.

Mr. William R. Chapline, one of Shepherdstown's oldest residents, was found dead in bed at his home in this place last Saturday morning. He had died some time during the night, and had passed away so quietly that it was not know just when the end came. Mr. Chapline was 79 years, 9 months and 26 days old. He had been in failing health for a long time, and the infirmities of old age pressed so heavily upon him that death came to him as a welcome relief. He was always a respected and exemplary man, and lived a quiet, honorable life. He was a member of the Lutheran church. He is survived by two sons and four daughters: John N. Chapline, at home; C.L. Chapline, of Harper's Ferry; Mrs. John Stipp of Shepherdstown; Mrs. Wm. H. Staley, of Belair, Md.; Mrs. James H. Rogers, of Hampshire county, W.Va.; and Mrs. Lillian Conklyn, of Sparta, Pa. The funeral service was held in the Lutheran church Monday morning, conducted by Rev. C.H. Rockey, and the remains were interred in Elmwood Cemetery.

According to a representative of The Elmwood Cemetery Association interment records prior to 1912 were destroyed by fire. The ledger that is being used started in 1912. Their records show Lot 58 owned by W. R. Chapline (a lot holds 8 graves). There is only one interment listed. This is for John Nourse Chapline, son of William & Margaret Chapline. There is a broken base in the ground where a stone had been located.

4/25/2013 Update: Thanks to Louise Benas for finding and photographing the marker for William R Chapline found in a stack of broken grave markers in the woods behind the cemetery.

6/15/2014 Update: In 2013 a small group of descendants of W.R. Chapline contributed funds for the restoration of his grave marker. Thanks to the Elmwood Cemetery Association for doing a wonderful job on the restoration which was completed in June 2014.
