The following information is taken from his obituary published on Sunday, Feb. 18, 1973 in the Great Bend Tribune (Great Bend, Barton, Kansas).
James A. Curtis died Friday, Feb. 16, 1973, at the Stafford District Hospital, (Stafford, Stafford, Kansas,) following a brief illness. Born Nov. 6, 1884, Curtis was a retired farmer and long-time resident of St. John. Survivors included his widow, Roberta Krenzel Brockman; three sons; seven daughters; a stepson; plus brothers, Herbert of Wichita and Robert of Seattle, WA; sister, Juanita Soice of Orange, CA; 24 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. His funeral was at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18, at Minnis Chapel, St. John with George Shelton officiating. Burial: Leesburg Cemetery. Memorials to the American Cancer Society.
Note: The obituary stated he was born at Hargrove, but this writer believes this may be a typo for the small community of Hargrave, Rush County, Kansas, as hisi father's obituary states the family first settled in Rush County when they came to Kansas.
