Henry was born in Butler County, Kentucky to Hickman Gray and Mary L. Ricketts. His mother died in Kentucky in 1865 and Henry moved with his widowed father to near Canton in Van Zandt County, Texas in 1871. In 1872 he relocated again with his parents and married brother Charles W. Gray to the rural area between Aubrey, Denton County and Valley View, Cooke County, Texas. They were living next door to William Green Daniel in Cooke County when Henry married Mr. Daniel's oldest daughter, Louisa Belle "Lula" Daniel on August 11, 1876.
After this marriage, Henry moved to near Avalon in Ellis county with his new bride Lula, his father Hickman and his unmarried sister Ada. Henry and Lula had three children: William Hickman, Jesse Dewitt and Mary Ethel. After Mary Ethel was born in December 1884, Lula died leaving Henry a widower with three very young children to raise.
So, needing female help or a substitute "mother', Henry took his three children and moved in with with Lula's younger sister, Fannie Daniel and her husband Alford T. Edgar in Weiland, Hunt County, Texas. Fannie took care of his children while Henry helped Alfred run his farm. Later, he would go into businees with Alfred Edgar operating a funiture factory at Weiland.
With all of his children grown, Henry found love once more in the person of Margarete E. Starkey, widow of Robert Powell of Hunt County. They were married on December 18, 1904 in Hunt County and lived in Quinland, Hunt County until he died October 6, 1925.
As of this time we have no information on the exact dates and places of death of Henry's two wives.
