Dr. Madeline Currie, PhD, 87, a long time resident of Alta Loma, California, passed away August 7, 2010 at her home with her devoted husband, Gail, by her side. For the past two years she had been ill with Parkinson's disease.
Madeline was born September 28, 1922, in Waco, Texas, the daughter of Herman A. Vinson and Ina Ivan Goodwyn who both were raised in the Rankin Community of Ellis County, Texas. Her Vinson ancestors came to Texas in 1885 from Choctaw County, Alabama. Her Goodwyn Ancestors were very successful plantation owners in Marengo County, Alabama before the Civil War. They migrated to Texas in the early 1870's.
Madeline first married Robb Sterling Ashburn in McLendon County, Texas about 1941. They had three sons, Robb Sterling, Jr., Mark Harris and Michael. After divorcing Mr. Ashburn, she attended Texas Women's University where she received her Bachelor's degree in business and economics in 1962. While attending TWU she was elected president of the local Epsilon chapter of Tau Pi Phi national honorary society.
Soon after graduating from TWU, she moved to Southern California with her three sons. She married Gail G. Currie on February 1, 1968 in Los Angeles. She received both her Masters and Doctorate degrees from UCLA. In 1987 she joined the faculty of Cal Poly Pomona where she capped her long and distinguished career in education as Dean of their Graduate Program. She was active for many years in Delta Kappa Gamma Society, her book club and Rotary International.
Madeline is survived by her loving husband, Gail; her three sons: Robert (Jodie) Ashburn of Wasilla, AK, Mark (Linda) Ashburn of Spokane, WA and Michael (Juli) Ashburn of Lynwood, WA. She is also survived by her brother Billy (Barbara) Vinson of Encinitas, CA, 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Madeline will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends. Memorial services will be held at 1PM on Monday, (8/16) at Stone Funeral Home, Upland. Private internment at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA. Stone Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
