John Richard Campbell was born in Hillsboro, Texas on December 3, 1913 to Benjamin Franklin Campbell and Dora Mae Owen. His father worked as a locomotive fireman for the Katy Railroad and was killed from steam inhalation when his train was involved in a wreck near Waco Texas on October 19, 1914. His mother married second to Rufus R. Vinson in 1921 and John was raised by his step-father Rufus. John was best friends with his cousin Elliott Owen Gorman. Both attended Bardwell High School where they played on the basketball team that advanced to the State of Texax Class B high school championship in 1932.

After high school he married Peggy "Mamie" Lorayne Bruce of Bardwell. She was the daughter of William Robert "Bob" Bruce and Vera L. Robertson. Her parents owned and operated and grocery store and filling station on HW 34 in Bardwell.

John Richard and Lorayne had two children:

1) Bobby Charles (born 1935)
2) Martha Charles (born 1939)

About 1940 John moved his family to Dallas and took a job as a streetcar conductor for the Dallas Transit Company.

About 1945 he moved to the San Diego area of California where he worked for the transit system there.

He and Loraine were members of the Baptist Church and kept a deep faith in the Lord all their lives.
