Charles L. DeGree Succumbs To Injuries Sustained In Fall Down Steps
Charles L. DeGree passed away at his home in this city at 2 o'clock Wednesday morning, aged 92 years, 5 months and 5 days. He was in good health for one of his advanced years until April 7 when he had the misfortune to fall down the basement steps at his home. Although he escaped fracturing any bones, he was badly bruised and was since confined to bed as a result of the shock he sustained.
The late Mr. DeGree was born December 2, 1837, in Vermont, the son of Moses and Mary (Changau) DeGree, natives of France and Canada respectively, and married in Canada. The father came to Canada when a young man, and after his marriage they moved to Vermont. There he engaged in farming but later went to New York and worked in a factory.
In 1869 he came to Minnesota and settled in Round Grove township, this county, where he secured 80 acres, and built a frame house 10 x 12 feet. There were only a few settlers in that township at that time, and oxen were used to till the land. The nearest mill was at New Auburn, and sacks of flour were often carried on the back from mill to the home, and the distance between their home and Glencoe and back, over 40 miles, was frequently made on foot. When flour could not be gotten, corn was groun in the coffee mill to serve as a substitute. The wagon, in those days was simply a sled with wooden runners. Mrs. DeGree spun wool into yarn for caps and mittens, wove the cloth for their clothing and braided straw for "Sunday hats." The father tanned hides for shoes for the family. The parents were of Catholic faith and were buried on their own land at Stewart, but when a cemetery was established the remains were exhumed and interred in the cemetery.
The late Charles DeGree had little chance to attend school, and acquired his education through his own efforts. He located in Round Grove township, where he bought an 80-acre farm which he operated for two years and then conducted a meat market at Stewart for five years. He then returned to Round Grouve township where he bought a quarter-section of land which he farmed until 1909, when he again took up residence in Stewart.
In a public capacity he served as road supervisor for many years, was clerk of school board seven years, and served as school trustee in Stewart. He was a member of the Mahoney Elevator Co., and the Stewart Creamery Co.
Mr. DeGree was married in New York on July 29, 1865, to Mary Hurbert, daughter of Frank and Mary Hurbert, natives of New York. She passed away in 1911. Nine children were the issue of this marrieage, eight of whom survive: namely, George, of Detroit, Mich.; Frank, of Sauk Center; Polly, of Kalispell, Montana; Mrs. H.L. (Louise) Debill, Brainerd; Charles, of Clear Lake; Dr. James, of Rothsay; Robert, of Renville, and Albert of St. Cloud. The one deceased daughter was Mrs. Martha Young. One sister, Mrs. Louis Forchier, of Willmar, also survives.
Mr. DeGree was married again on Nov. 2, 1912, to Mrs. Julia Ann White, the widow of John White, who survives him. In the autumn of 1919, the couple moved to Glencoe to reside.
Dr. James DeGree, of Rothsay, had been constantly at the bedside of his father since his unfortunate fall, and Mrs. H.L. Debill and Robert Degree also assisted in the care of their father during his last illness.
Funeral services will be conducted from St. George's Catholic church at 8 o'clock Friday morning by Rev. Father Moloney, and interment will be made in the Catholic cemetery at Stewart, alongside the grave of his first wife.
