Jacob is listed as one of Jacob and Barbara (Reigel) Winkelman's children in the 1850 US PA census records for Northumberland Borough, Northumberland county. In the 1860 US PA census Jacob lists his occupation as "farmer", residing with his brother and his mother in RushTownship. He was a Civil War Veteran, Pvt., Co. F, 131st PVI; source of information: BELL'S HISTORY. The initials J.P. Winkelman are presumed to stand for Jacob Peter Winkelman. After the war he married, and was residing in Point Township at the time he died at the age of 30, leaving behind a wife and two infant children. John and Polly Gundrum, grandparents of Jacob's children, and mother to Jacob's wife, became their legal guardians. According to the notes found in the 1837 "hymnal" once owned by the wife of Grand-nephew Harvey McCumber, Clara McCumber, Jacob died of a "sun stroke". SNYDER COUNTY ANNALS, page 152, notes that Jacob was buried in Row's Church Cemetery, which is located in Snyder County. Records from the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sunbury, PA, note that he died on July 16, 1868. Records from Riverview Cemetery note he died on July 14, 1868. The later date is probably the burial date.
