Serrano, Alba Maffei
91 1/28/1918-9/15/2009 Longtime Portland resident, Alba Maffei Serrano,passed away peacefully at her home in Greenbrae,Ca1if.,Sept.15,2009. AIba was born in Vignola,Italy, Jan.28,1918. Her family immigrated to Portland in 1926.
She attended Hosford Grade'school and graduated from Jane Addams Hiqh School, earning her United States citizenship by attending classes at night. As a young woman she worked at Pendleton Woolen Mills, Standard Oil and Porter Scarpelli Macaroni companies. She married Sam Serrano in 1946 and they made their home on Mount Tabor until moving the family to the San Francisco Bay area in 1956. She was a homemaker and mother and participated in the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts', Marin Art and Garden Center, Sunny Hills and the Marjn Ballet aquacade. Her husband Sam worked as a landscape architect for 40 years, primarily with the National Park Service. His work allowed the family to spend summers living in many of the national parks throughout the Western United States. In 2003, Alba bought a second home at Donner Lake in Sierra Nevada,Calif., and since then divided her time between her home there and in Greenbrae. Her great joys were her family, her many friends, her extensive gardens and travel anywhere and
anytime. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54
years, Sam; and by her sister, Chico Barberis of Portland. She is proudly and lovingly remembered by her son, Tino Serrano (Mary); and daughter, Georgia Giondomenica (Steve);
grandchildren, Samantha Shura and Kendyl and Brandon Serrano; qreat-grandsons, Elliot Watts and Landon Shura,
sister,Ilda Goodrich (Bob); and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20,2010, in Adams Chapel at River View Cemetery 8421 S.W. Macadam Ave.,Portland. The family suggests that gifts in AIba's name be made to Hospice by the Bay in Corte Madera, Ca1if.; Canine Companions in Santa Rosa, Calif.; or the National Park Service Foundation in Washington, D.C.
