"MURFREESBORO -- Gene Edward Reid, 72, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, formerly of Mahomet, passed away at 8:38 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2007 at the Mayfield Rehabilitation Center in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Services celebrating his life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2007 at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home in Mattoon, with Pastor Brent Roberson officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, with military graveside rites conducted by Mattoon V.F.W. Post #4325. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.

He was born July 30, 1934 in Mattoon, the son of Kermit and Sara (Copeland) Reid.

Survivors include four daughters, LuAnn Reid of Quincy, Peg Reid of Urbana, Janet (Vernon) Brazle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Lori Stevenson of Rantoul; a brother, Richard Reid of Evanston; a sister, Joy Starkovich of Green Valley, Arizona; and four grandchildren, Jeane Yost of San Jose, California, Dustin Stevenson of Urbana, and Madeleine and Clara Brazle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Mr. Reid was retired after twenty years in the Building Service Department at the University of Illinois. He was a U. S. Army veteran, and a member of Sangamon Valley Christian Center.

For those who wish, the family suggests memorials to Teen Challenge or Sangamon Valley Christian Center."

The funeral for Gene Edward Reid was Friday at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Pastor Brent Roberson officiating. Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens with military rites by V.F.W. Post 4325. Members participating were Dana Denney commander; Joe Matthews, chaplain; Bill Miller, bugler; color guard members Scott Buesking, Tuny Cox, Cliff Roling and John Protz; George McMichaels, firing squad commander; and firing squad members Ron Smith, Warren Miller, Bill Nash, John Daily, Larry Owen and Gene Espe.

Pianist Karen Cook played various selections. Ron and Karen Cook sang "Amazing Grace" and You'll Never Walk Alone."

Pallbearers were Oran Marshall, Jerry Farney, Duane May, Mark Taylor, Rick Copeland, Don Dennis and Dustin Stevenson.
