Robert Lee Coffelt was born in Kendallville IN to William Ray Coffelt and Edna Ann Gustin. He grew up in Kendallville with brothers, Delphos (Buzz) and Herman, and sisters, Helen (Drerup Reick), Mildred (Kline), and Betty (Jordan). Bob's dad Ray was an electrician and his mother Edna was a homemaker. Bob's father died in Aug 1929 and Edna had six children to raise during the depression. Bob went into the Navy in 1943 and served on the ship LSM 72 during WWII. He was an Electrician's mate on the ship. He was in the invasion of Okinawa, Japan in April 1945. He came back to Kendallville and married to Doris Jean Friskney November 15, 1946. Their children were born in Kendallville: Karen Ann, Charlotte Ilene, Kim Ryan, Alanna Sue, Jeanette Marie, and Kevin Robert. Bob went to night school to get an electrical degree. He worked at Kraft Foods from 1943 until 1965 when he started his own electrical business in Ligonier. He moved his family to Ligonier Feb. 12, 1966. He wired Monsanto, Sorg's and Ligonier Rubber Co. in Ligonier. He lived there until 1971 when he and Doris moved with Kevin to Dade City FL. They moved back to Kendallville in 1974. Bob worked at Hossinger Refrigeration, and finally McCray Hospital. He was an excellent electrician. He found out in Feb 1986 that he had an enlarged heart, and retired then. He asked God to give him five years of retirement. Bob lived four years and 8 months, and he died October 9, 1990, peacefully while sleeping. Bob had 13 grandchildren at the time of his death: Mindy, Julie and Bobby Morse; Stephanie, Angela, and Christopher Waldron; Douglas, Anthony, Nicole and Megan Coffelt; John Fox and Steven McGuire. He was predeceased by his grandson David William Fox on July 1, 1982.
Bob's favorite saying was "You can either enjoy the flowers in your life or let the weeds take over". He was sensitive, intelligent, musically-gifted, spiritual, honest, loving, and understanding. Bob was a great man who was loved by all who knew him.
