Pluma was the second of six children born to Joseph and Mariah (maiden name unknown) Whitely. Her exact birthplace is, so far, unknown, but we do know that by age 12 (1860) she was living in Danby, Tompkins County, N.Y., next door to John and Clarinda (Clark) HOVER. The Hovers' son, George W., was only two months older than Pluma and, childhood sweethearts, they married on 6 November 1864 -- at age sixteen. George was a day laborer/itinerant farmer and they moved frequently around south-central New York State. Pluma was to bear nine children, only four of whom survived to adulthood. Pluma died on 10 October 1918. George outlived her by 17 years but never remarried.

N.B. Two children for whom we have names, but whose burial sites continue to elude us are:
Ella May HOVER (1873-1879)
Frank HOOVER (1876-1944)
