James Madison Williams was the first born son of John Davenport "Jocky" Williams and Elizabeth Fields. He was born July 24, 1846 in Scott County, Virginia. The Williams family migrated to Southwest Missouri in a group that included neighbors named Hilton and Peters. The exact date of the migration is unknown, but is believed to be before 1850.
James married Elizabeth Jane Potts at an unknown date in 1865 or 1866, probably in Lawrence County, Missouri. Their first three children were born in Lawrence County. Around 1877-78, three families including James Williams, John Benson Peters and Marion Harbert migrated to Texas where they settled in the Prairie Dale community in Hill County. These families are found living adjacent to each other in the 1880 census. Mary Easter Williams Peters wife of John Peters was a first cousin to James (their fathers were brothers). One theory is that they were in Texas to assist with the wild mustang round ups for which their fathers were known.
