Frederick was born in Mexico, New York to Ezra Crane (1809 - 1875) and Mary Ann Pond Crane (1812 - 1885), both of whom came from Vermont. By 1860, the family had moved to Lynn County, Iowa. He was there with his mother in 1880, his father having died, and was shown as a farmer in the census.
Frederick married Jane M. "Jennie" Binley abt.1884, probably in Iowa. They moved to Ainsworth, Nebraska before February 1885, when their first child, Edith, was born.
Both the birth and census records show further movement. Frederick and Jennie had nine children (see Jennie's memorial for details). In addition to Edith, John and Guy were born in Ainsworth. The fourth child, Olive, was born in Iowa. They returned to Ainsworth for Hazel and Orley. Then, back in Iowa for Edmond. They returned again to Ainsworth, where Walter and Milo were born and Jennie died.
Frederick moved again after Jennie's death. The 1910 census shows him in Santa Ana, California and the 1920 census in Hemet, CA, where he lived alone. Finally, the 1930 census shows him in Pomona, CA, as a father-in-law in daughter Edith's and her husband, Roy Johnson's household. He died in Pomona on Apr. 20, 1937 and was buried there.
