VANDALIA UNION - 20Apr1922 - GRANDMOTHER BROWNING DIES AT AGE OF 94
Mrs. Mary E. Browning, widow of Wallace Browning, deceased, & mother of Sheriff Browning, died Easter morning, 16Apr1922, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard Mattes, in Shafter Twp. Her funeral occurred from the Mattes home Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock & her interments was in the Browning cemetary nearby. Six granddaughters acted as pallbearers.
Deceased was born in Frankfort Co., KY, 10Sep1827 & was, therefore, 94 years, 6 months & 6 days old at the time of her death. She came to this Co. from KY when 8 years of age, the family having as a conveyance wagons drawn by oxen. She walked a good part of the way & her mother rode horseback all the way, carrying in her arms a younger child. Wallace Browning also came from KY, the 2 arriving in this Co. only a few months apart, & settling in the community in which they lived all their lives, 7 miles northwest of Vandalia. They were married 22Jan1847, & moved on the farm where she spent the remainder of her life. Her husband died some fifteen years ago & since that time she has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Mattes, on the old homestead.
There are born to Mr. & Mrs. Browning 9 children, 4 of them preceding her to the beyond. Those living are: John H. Browning, Levi J. Browning, Cyrus Browning, Merinda Whitten & Mary Mattes. Those deceased are: Mrs. Ezekiel Roe, William W. Browning, Alfred Browning & Virginia Browning, who died in infancy. Besides these children Mrs. Browning raised 5 grandchildren & 2 orphans, which she took in infancy. She is survived by 96 descendants, 5 of them sons & daughters, 41 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren & 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Browning was one of the most remarkable women of her community, a grand old ladt of sturdy character who lived a simple Christian life & was loved & respected by everybody who knew her.
