Death: Feb. 20, 1979

Dr. Richard H. "Doc" Boggs, 75, a well known retired Franklin dentist, died February 20, 1978 in Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Va., where he had been a patient since suffering a heart attack at his home here.

Dr. Boggs had practiced his profession 50 years before retiring in 1977. He began the practice of dentistry in Petersburg in 1927 after graduating from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. He moved his practice to Franklin in 1933 where he remained until his retirement.

He was a deacon in the Franklin Presbyterian Church, and he gave active support to local public service organizations such as the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department and the Pendleton Nursing Home. He was a charter member of the Franklin Lions Club.

One of his distinguishing characteristics was his jovial and friendly disposition which made it possible for him to have a good laugh with everyone he met and which earned for him a wide circle of friends.

He was a avid outdoorsman and throughout his lifetime he maintained an interest in all forms of sports and athletics. He was a dedicated hunter and fisherman and an outstanding athlete. He played baseball while a boy in Franklin and later at Potomac State College at Keyser which he attended before going to dental school. He also played on the Potomac State football team.

Dr. Boggs had a sincere interest in his community and his county, and he was much concerned that changes be for the better rather than for the worse.

He developed a busy dental practice during the 44 years that he served the people of Pendleton and adjoining counties. He built the professional building on Main Street which he sold last year and which houses the new Pill Box Pharmacy.

Dr. Boggs was born August 12, 1903, at Franklin and was the son of the late Hugh and Annie H. Daugherty Boggs.

He was married September 29, 1934 to the former Dorothy Trumbo, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Jane Ann Core of Painesville, Ohio; two sons, Richard T. Boggs of Verona, Va., and Gene H. Boggs of Franklin; and six grandchildren. An infant daughter preceded him in death.

A funeral service was conducted Friday at 2 p. m. at Franklin Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Joseph Martin of Elkins and the Rev. Donald S. Wilkinson. Interment was by Brown Funeral Service in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
