Mary Jane was the daughter of Mr. Benjamin E. Johnson, and Mrs. Hester A. Hudson Johnson, of Henry County, AL. Mary Jane and James were married in the home of her mother, Mrs. Johnson.

According to her Widow's Application she was totally blind in 1899.

The obituary from the Troy Messenger, dated January 7, 1903, indicates she had been blind for some years and died a from injuries sustained when she fell down her rear stairs on Christmas Eve, 1902.

Her children surviving are listed as C.A. Beard, a minister in Chattanooga, TN, R.A. Beard in Ochlochnee, GA, and Misses Annie and Minnie Beard of Troy, AL.

Her grave is unmarked.
