Jakob and his wife Susanna and their children arrived in the United States Nov 4, 1867. They settled in Buffalo, New York. In the mid-1870's several of their children including William, Bernard and Frederick died from scarlet fever, their burial place is not known. Jakob and Susanna died in 1879 and 1875, leaving the older children to raise the younger ones.

About a quarter after six o'clock yesterday morning a German named Jacob Gerber, while going to his work, was suddenly seized with hemorrhage at the comer of William and Pratt streets, and falling to the sidewalk died in a few minutes. The hemorrhage was, caused by the rapturing of a blood vessel. Coroner Almendinger, on being notified, caused the body to be removed to the late home of the deceased, No. 255 Watson Street. Gerber was a widower fifty four years of age and leaves five children.
