John Gray, his wife, Mary, and several children came from Maine to Hennepin County, MN. In Maine, they were farmers and lived first in Sagadohoc County and later, Piscataquis County. Their ten children were Eliza, Solomon, Charles, James, Mary,Lucy, John, Daniel, and Albert. Daughters Eliza and Rebecca died in Maine at ages 17 and 4 respectively. Son, Albert, died at age 20 near Boston, Mass. Sons, Charles and James both went to Lima,Peru and lived there a number of years. Charles came back to America in 1883. James died in Lima in 1912. Solomon, John, Lucy, and Charles are buried in the family plot at Lakewood Cemetery. Mary and Daniel are buried in Sherburne County, Minnesota.
Originally, John and Mary were buried at Maplewood Cemetery, but later were moved to Lakewood Cemetery.
John Gray was the oldest son of Daniel Gray and Mary (Williams) Gray of Topsham, Maine. This Gray line goes back to George Gray of Lanark, Scotland, that came to America on the ship "Unity" in 1651. George Gray was a soldier prisoner in the Battle of Dunbar, and was brought over and sold as an indentured servant in Maine. He eventually settled at Berwick, Maine, where he died.
