Grant L. Barben

Another member of ‘The Greatest Generation' has finished the good fight and returned home to his Father in Heaven.

Grant "Speed" Barben passed away peacefully at the age of 89 from natural causes. Lamented and missed by everyone who knew him.

Speed had truly cultivated the gift of charity touching the lives of everyone he met with his positive attitude and solid work ethic.

Born September 30, 1923, to Victoria and Walter Barben in Woodrow, UT. The only boy with five sisters, he quickly learned hard work and responsibility.

Tragedy struck at the age of 12 when his father passed away from a heart attack and he was thrust into the role of Man of the House. At age 17, he obtained employment at Hill Air Force Base. Little did he know that shortly after June 6th 1944, he would find himself supporting Gen. Patton's 3rd army's thrust into France and the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to his civilian career as a maintenance technician and Flight Test crew chief.

During this time, he met and married Patricia Joyce Nichol.

He re-enlisted in the Air Force and served in Korea and Japan.

After 35 years, he retired from Hill AFB, started his own business as a general contractor and spent the rest of his life building houses and hot rods.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and three children, Kathleen Cook (Lynn), Kenneth Scott(Chris), and Marianne Jones (David), ten grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held Friday, January 4 from 6 to 8 pm at the LDS Chapel located at 1449 S. Thoroughbred Way, Kaysville, UT. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5th at 1 pm at the same location. He will be buried with full military honors at the Kaysville cemetery.

Everyone will miss him dearly. As Speed said in his last goodbyes, "I'll see you on the other side."
