Richard Baker was born September 8, 1836 in Frittenden, Kent, England. He and wife, Rebecca, born January 28, 1844 in Cranbrook, Kent, England along with their four daughters, Anne, Jane, Mary and Mercy (shows as Seray on Passenger List) and two sons, William and Benjamin boarded the ship, Celtic of the White Star Line and departed Liverpool England for the United States. They arrived in New York on October 17, 1884. They then made Oneonta, Otsego, New York their home. Submitted by Bruce E. Newell.

Mrs. Rebecca Baker

Mrs. Rebecca Baker died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Underdown, at 86 West Broadway, at 10:25 last evening after a long illness since August last. She had been an invalid for some seven years and had been a patient sufferer throughout all that time, always having a kind word for others, although an intense sufferer. The funeral services will be held from the house on Monday at 2:30 o'clock and will be private.

Mrs. Baker's maiden name was Rebecca Tamsett and she was born in Kent, England, 63 years ago, and living in that country until 22 years ago last October, when she came to Oneonta. She was a noble Christian woman and was beloved by all who knew her. Her surviving children are Mrs. Underdown, Mrs. John Pearson, Mrs. Edward Blanchard, Mrs. Mary Baker, Benjamin and William Baker, all of Oneonta, and Mrs. James White of Binghamton. She is survived also by three brothers, John and George Tamsett of Oneonta and Samuel Tamsett of Schenectady, and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Thornburn of Oneonta and Mrs. Merca Powney of cleveland, Ohio.["Oneonta Daily Star, Oneonta, Otsego, New york, March 30, 1907."]
