DEATH OF JAMES ABBEY. A notice under the obituary head will advise our reader of the death of one whose name has for many years been familiar to them – JAMES ABBEY. This sad event occurred at the residence of his mother at ten o'clock last evening. It was not unexpected. Mr. A.'s health had been declining for some months, and for several weeks past his most intimate friends were apprehensive that he could not recover. The writer of this knew Mr. Abbey intimately and well. We can truly say we never knew a man of nobler qualities than he possessed. In all the relations of life he was a model. As a friend he was true and staunch, but it was as a son that his noble character most conspicuously exhibited itself. As the only son of an aged and widowed mother, he was constantly solicitous of her comfort and welfare. Never did son return the maternal love with more devoted affection. When he became conscious that he must die, next to preparations for the great change, his thoughts and words were of his mother. Oh! happy mother, to have such a son!
Mr. Abbey was by profession a steamboatman, and he was known everywhere on the Western waters as a contributor to the newspapers. He wrote much, and his peculiar style and apt quotations gave a piquancy to his productions which made them much sought after. He occasionally wrote for our own paper, and was a regular contributor to the St. Louis, New Orleans, and other journals. At the time of his death he was an officer of the new St. Louis and New Orleans packet M. S. Mepham. Mr. M. was his ardent friend.
Born and reared in New Albany, Mr. Abbey was known to all our old citizens and many others. We are sure he had no enemy on earth, and his death will cause a pang of sorrow in many a heart. His memory will be cherished by hundreds long after the green sod shall have grown over his grave. - New Albany Daily Ledger 16 May 1864 p2c1
