Her mother, Cordelia, died from tuberculosis when Frances was six. Ethel Cissell, became her step mother when she was 10. Louise and her brothers worked on the household chores, falling especially to Louise, the only girl. Because of this, she left at the age of 16 and found work rolling cigars in Cincinnati, Ohio. She also found work as a nurse's aide. Later, back in Kentucky, Louise and Louis married at the Fancy Farm picnic. On their wedding night a cyclone blew the roof off their house in one solid piece. They had their first child. Stella, the following year. She bore eight children and raised them while maintaining the farm and garden. Obtaining work as a nurse's aide she showed ability and was encouraged to become a practical nurse. Since she had not completed elementary school the studying for nursing was aided by her daughter Sue. She graduated and worked as a licensed practical nurse in Obion County General Hospital in Tennessee, until the family relocated to California in 1955. She worked as a private duty nurse helping Ethel and Deana Hayden care for their elderly mother. They rented at Normandy Apartments for a couple of years. They purchased a home in Glendale, California. She supplemented the family income at Dolly Madison Bakery. They rented the house, they owned, behind their own, to various renters, until she was widowed in 1970, then she moved into it and her youngest son, Tom and his family lived in the front house. During her last years she taught her daughter-in-law Chris her techniques for the Southern cooking for which the family loved dearly.
