Willard learned the painting and papering business while working for his grandfather for a number of years. He then went to work for the Model Paint Co. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and worked for that company for a number of years until the owners of the company retired and he bought the business from them. He continued in the contracting business and provided employment for his boys and remains in business today (1998).
