N. Ruth Backstrom, 78, of West Newton, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at Hempfield Manor, Hempfield Township. She was born May 10, 1929, in West Newton, the daughter of the late Caleb and Rachel (Swank) Greenawalt.
Ruth was a lifelong farmer.
Surviving are her daughter, Deb Blum and husband, Bill, of Smithton; her grandchildren, Becky and Jenn Blum, of Smithton, and John Blum, of West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emerson "Lefty" Backstrom, in 1999; and her brother, Frank Greenawalt, in 1996.
According to Ruth's wishes, there will be no public visitation. J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., West Newton, in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
