In 1866, Aris and Tetje emigrated from The Netherlands to Michigan, USA. Aris went first in March of 1866 and Tetje followed with the children in August of 1866. According to the "Staat van landverhuizers" (status of immigrants) they were well-to-do. In Texel, Aris was a cattle farmer and the Ottawa County Michigan Index of 1892-93 is also listing him as a farmer.
According to the 1900 United States Census, Aris and Tetje owned their farm outright. They had no mortgage left to pay.
