Borne on November 19, 1930 in Crystal, he was a sone of the late John Hampton Harless and Rodella Vaughn Harless. He had been a resident of Bluefield for 23 years and was retired from the US Air Force with 27 years service as Electronics Technician Senior Master Sargent with the 9th Strategical Reconnaissance Wing. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served two tours in Vietnam. He was a member of Midway Church of Christ and was a member of the VFW Post 3112. He was the former owner andd operator of the Ceramic Hobby Hut in Bluefield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Naomi Moody Harless; and one sister, Pauline Thorne.
Survivors include his wife Betty Eller Harless of the home; daughters, Martha Barker and husband Jackie of Bluefield, Sandra Moony of Bluefield, Jeannie Laney and husband Craig of Tomball, TX and Barbara Bevers and husband Danny of Bluewell; son, John Harless Jr. and wife Patricia of Bluewell; step children, Shelia Hussian, Robert and John Middleton and Meloney Layne all of Chicago, IL.; sister Elsie Tyree of Umatilla, FL., and brothers Wayne of Bluefield and Jimmy of Lexington, NC., grandsons Jeremy Barker, Jared Barker, Josh Laney, Will Harless III and D.J. Beavers; grandaughters Jessica Gentry, Amber Terry, Heather Mooney and Kendall Laney; step grandchildren Tonia Hussian, Casey Layne and Christy Layne; step great grandchildren Brieanne Hussian, Alesiana Hussian, Derondre Hussian and Grant Layne.
Funeral services willbe conducted at 1 pm on Wednesday at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home, Bluewell. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Bluewell where full military graveside services will be conducted at the Air Force Division.
