Marie U. Scheel passed away on February 21, 2015 at the age of 100. She was born October 4, 1914, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Malakias Saviniemi in Hancock, Michigan. Marie left the upper peninsula of Michigan in 1935 to study voice at Sherwood University of Music in Chicago, Illinois. It was there that she met her husband, Weldon B. Scheel from Lockhart, Texas. They were married in LaGrange, Illinois on August 31, 1940, moved to Nixon, Texas and then to Carrizo Springs. They came to Austin in 1946, where Marie was an elementary school music teacher for many years. For almost thirty years, Marie led the choir at the Congregational Church of Austin.

Marie leaves behind her brother and sister-in-law Rafael and Elvi Saviniemi of Southfield, MI; niece Ann Saviniemi of Southfield, MI; niece and nephew, Lois and John Sefcovic; great-nephews Matthew and Ryan Sefcovic of Southfield, MI; and countless good friends. She was a member and past president of the Wednesday Morning Music Club, and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. Always proud of her Finnish heritage and Michigan roots, Marie enjoyed love of music, family and friends throughout her life.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 3pm at the Congregational Church of Austin on 408 W. 23rd St. Austin, TX 78705. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Church of Austin or to a charity of your choice.
