The day for Melvin Elmer Mounts Sr. always began at 5 a.m. Before his shift was through at 1 p.m. he had milked about 50 cows for 300 gallons.

The milking, done at Mayview State Hospital in Bridgeville, would supply 5 state hospitals.

"I remember his wife, Roberta, used to accompany him to work because she didn't want to be left alone," said Edgar Krug, his former supervisor. "Mel was an easy-going, slow moving, dependable individual who didn't say much and never caused any kind of commotion. His pleasant disposition seemed to help the cows stay contented. He was very good with the animals."

That was six years ago. With the closing of the dairy farm in 1975 came retirement for Mr. Mounts, 68, who died Sunday in his home, 740 Michigan Ave., Washington, Washington County.

‘Mel's chores," Krug said, "consisted of feeding each individual cow, preparing all the automatic milking equipment, sanitizing it and getting the stables in shape daily as the cows were turned out."

A native of Buffalo Township, Mr. Mounts was a member of Eat Buffalo United Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Dr. James D., , Melvin E., Jr., the Rev. Bruce and Earl; four brothers, Cephas, Sherman, Dean, and Charles; three sisters, Mildred Applegate, Louise Breese and Martha Byers; and three grandchildren.

Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Howard V. Ferrell Funeral Home, 219 Main St., Claysville, where services will be held at noon tomorrow. Burial will be at Claysville Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to East Buffalo United Presbyterian Church.
