Lawrence Edward "Ed" Markham, formerly of La Grande, died of cancer at his home near Winlock, Washington, on Saturday, June 29, 1996.
At his request there were no services. The remains were cremated.
Mr. Markham was born in Irrigon On March 19, 1920. Because of the Depression, he left school at a young age and traveled and worked at many different jobs.
In 1940 he married Laura Virginia Hutchison of La Grande. They were he parents of six children and were later divorced.
Mr. Markham serving on PT boats in the Philippines for the Navy during World War II. He returned to Oregon after the war and was on police forces in La Grande, Elgin and Baker City.
During the 1950s, he moved to southeast Alaska and worked in camps and restaurants. He worked on the Alaska Ferry System from 1971 until his retirement as chief steward in 1982.
In 1972 he married the former Bessie Peterson of Ketchikan, Alaska. In recent years, he enjoyed square dancing, fishing, camping and gardening at the family farm near Winlock. For many years, he baked cookies and worked at rest stops for the Grange, the senior citizens and the Winlock Library. He was a member of the Ketchikan Elks and Moose lodges and the Centralia-Chehalis Elks Lodge.
In addition to his wife, Bessie, he is survived by two sons, Edwin of Boise and Larry of Costa Mesa, Calif., and four daughters, Babs Sykes of Boise, Mary Jederberg of Dayton, Ohio, Ginger Jederberg of Vale, Oregon and Debbie Strong of La Grande. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Gail Wade of Virginia, John Peterson of Ketchikan, Alaska and Kitty Smith of Rochester, Washington; 30 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jim and Boyd Markham and one sister, Joanne Lathrop.
