The following was taken from the writings of Eliza Jane F. Gilbert, one of her daughters. Eliza Lewis Farnsworth was born September 21, 1832 at Stamford, Delaware, New York. Her mother Jemina Sydam died when she was a very small child so her father got the Prophet Joseph Smith and his wife to take care of her until he married again. Her father Nathan Lewis married Rebeckah W. Johnson on November 6, 1838 at Far West, Missouri when Eliza was seven years old. They migrated to Pleasant Grove, Utah about September 1853. Eliza was old enough to remember the Prophet because he made a great impression on her young life. She told us how he used to take her on his lap and call her his girl. She could always remember what a wonderful personality he had, and she learned to love him like a father. At his death, she was thirteen years of age. She was able to remember some of the things that took place before the Prophet's death. She was big-hearted and took care of more than one person without a home and would treat them just like one of her own family. People sent for her from far and near to take care of the sick. I don't think there was ever a time when people came for her that she didn't leave everything and go do what she could to help out, never thinking of charging a cent. She always used home raised herbs to doctor the sick. I can't remember when she didn't raise a generous supply of saffron, catnip and summer savory. In the summer, she would gather a root she called Ollyinvita or "Indian Root" which she used for breaking up fevers. Another root she gathered which she called "Crows Foot" she used for dysentery. She was always successful in her nursing.
She was one woman who gave her life in service for others. She was loved and respected by all who knew her and died a faithful Latter-day Saint. She died September 18, 1899, just three days before her 67th birthday.
