Ed Carlisle Arnold was born August 23, 1882, the son of Ben Arnold and Florence Grandon Arnold at Valentine, Nebraska. In his early childhood he came with his parents to a ranch on the Bad River near Ft. Pierre, Sd, later moving to Pierre, thence to Evarts, at that time the end of the Milwaukee Railroad line; and then to Mobridge to live for a time before coming to Hettinger in 1910. He clerked in a store at Glenham, SD near Mobridge for a number of years. In his early manhood he operated a commissary and pumping station for the Milwaukee Road at Pontus, SD. After resigning from the railroad, he farmed North of Hettinger, then moved into Hettinger in 1919 to enter the automobile and machinery business and to make his home here until the time of his death.
He was educated at St. Francis Mission and at Pierre, SD. He was baptized in the Christian faith at St. Francis Mission. In his early years he was a member of the Oddfellow and Modern Woodman lodges.
On Dec. 12, 1908 he was united in marriage to Miss Rose Augusta Tesch of Park Ridge, Ill, at Mound City, SD, who survives him. To this union were born two daughters, Florence Wright, Haynes; and Irene Reimer, Scranton. He is also survived by three adopted grandchildren, Rosemary Wright of Haynes and Zona and Tommy Reimer of Scranton; three sisters, Lulu Bachelder of Fir Mountain, Sask., Canada; Laura Homous of Morristown, SD; and Blanche Hanson of Glenham, SD One brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held December 29 at the Lutheran Church in Hettinger.
