William McGandy, son of Joshua McGaundey, was born in Wells, England. He was a coachman for Anthony Whitfield, a yeoman/landowner.

On 10 Feb 1846 he married Anthony Whitfield's daughter Lucy in Church of Witton le Wear, Diocese of Durham, England. Witnesses were Joseph Hopper and William Hardy, and they wed in the presence of Ann Whitfield.

The couple came to America in 1850 (according to 1900 Census) with their two older sons, Anthony (b. 31 Jan 1948) & Joseph (b. 17 May 1850) - both in Aukland, Durham, England. The family settled in Perrysburg, Cattaraugus, New York. Their other 8 children born in New York were: Mary Anne (22 Sept 1852), William E. (11 Aug 1854), John (14 June 1856), Lucy (22 May 1858), Earl (16 July 1860), Elizabeth "Lizzie" (12 July 1865), Francis "Frank" D. ( 24 Aug 1867), and George(13 Sept 1869).

William joined the Army at Perrysburg, NY on 07 Sept. 1861. He was wounded in the left leg at Battle of 1st Fredricksburg, VA serving under General Mead and was discharged on 04 Sept. 1864 at Albany, NY.

The Magandy family moved to Lincoln County, Minnesota. William died in Tyler, Lincoln County, Minnesota on 01 Aug 1900. Lucy had died in Sept 1885. Both are buried in Memorial Hill Cemetery, Lake Benton, Minnesota.

Some members of the Magandy family changed the spelling of the surname to Magandy - including William and his son William E. Magandy. Other sons kept the McGandy spelling. The spellings have changed from McGaundey (as shown on William & Lucy McGaundey's marriage certificate in Durham, England) to Magandy and McGandy.

Note: William Magandy's original headstone deteriorated and was replaced, with incorrect dates for birth and death. Since finding his obituary, the dates for his birth and death are recorded in this Find A Grave Memorial to match that obituary. However, his Civil War Discharge papers dated 21 Sept 1864 stated he was 39 years of age, making his birth year 1825 as is shown on the new headstone. There are various censuses showing dates from abt 1822, 1823 to abt 1825 or 1826.
