Mr. Cotton was a Philadelphia firefighter for 26 years. He served on Engine 40, Ladder 4, and was known as "Top Cat".
In 1967, he became a security officer for General Electric Co.
Mr. Cotton was born in Philadelphia. He graduated from Roman Catholic High School.
Mr. Cotton pitched for a minor league baseball team.
He later volunteered to teach pitchers at Southwest Philadelphia playgrounds and in the 1960s, co-founded the McCreesh Playground Senior Baseball Organization. He served as shop steward of his union at General Electric.
Mr. Cotton had been a member of St. Eugene's Church in Primos since 1998. He was also a member of the benefactor circle for Christ the King School in Norfolk, Va., McCreesh Association Father & Sons and Local Union No. 22.
Survivors: Sons, Thomas J. Cotton 3d of Dallas, Texas, John Cotton of Secane, Michael Cotton of Primos, Joseph Cotton of Blackwood, N.J. daughters, Miriam Cotton of Chesapeake, Va., Peg Gendaszek of Aston and six grandchildren.
Funeral mass was at St. Eugene's Church.
