Mildred was born Gertrude Grant, with her father being Floyd E. Grant and her mother Bertha Eleanor Moore. Mildred was adopted as a young child by Dr. William M. Harvey and Alice Maude Fox. She first married Samuel John Hughes, II in Toledo, Lucas, Ohio, and lived in Belfast, Antrim, Northern Ireland until Samuel's death in 1943. She and Samuel had three children: 1) Samuel John Hughes III (1927-1991); 2) Carolyn Anne Hughes Scott Claerhout (1930-1994); and 3) William Harvey Hughes, born 1932. She married her second husband, Carl Bernard Ecker (1902-1973) in 1947.
