Thelma McGrady Gardner, age 100, a resident of Strasburg, Virginia, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2014 at her residence.

She was born in the community of Frog Level in Coalwood, West Virginia on January 9, 1914, to the late John Walter McGrady and his wife Mattie Lou Dickerson McGrady. Her father was a carpenter and her mother was a home maker. (Her brother, Arnold, called Thelma "Frog" because of where she was born.) Thelma was a kind, loving, and non-judgmental lady, a talented artist, and gardener who loved to quilt, crochet, and fish.

Thelma was proud of her impressive trophies on the wall at her home. She is now fishing the streams of Heaven with the love of her life, Allen.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Eugene Gardner, and siblings, Opal McGrady Liddle, Arnold Allen McGrady, Lloyd Eli McGrady, and Vera A. McGrady Curto.

Thelma was proud of her Dickerson and McGrady family connections. She always referred to her uncles, aunts, and numerous first cousins as "My People", and she truly loved "Her People".

Survivors include her children, John Allen Gardner of Lebanon Church, Virginia, and Rebecca Gardner Lucas and her husband, Robert L. Lucas Jr., of Strasburg, Virginia; and grandchildren, Marshall Gardner and his wife Kristen; Jeremiah A. Lucas of Strasburg; and Brian E. Gardner, of Lebanon Church; great-grandchildren, Megan, Jesse, and Allen Gardner, Dagan Lucas Riffey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Stover Memorial Chapel with Reverend Kitty Hahn officiating. Her grandchildren served as pallbearers.

Thelma was laid to rest on Friday, November 14, 2014 in the James Gardner Cemetery, Carroll County, Virginia, where she will rest for eternity with her husband Allen Eugene Gardner, a decorated World War II veteran.
