Rev. Donald E. May
CAMP HILL, Pa. - The Rev. Donald E. May, 76, of 343 Regent St., and formerly of Chambersburg, Pa., died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Menno-Haven in Chambersburg.
Born Feb. 14, 1925, in Paris, France, he was the son of the late Rev. Phillip J. and Ellen Belk May.
He attended schools in Africa, Glenolden High School in Philadelphia and graduated from Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy. He attended Amherst College in Amherst, Mass., received a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Princeton University, and a bachelor of divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. He earned a master's degree in sacred theology from Gettysburg Seminary, in Gettysburg, Pa., and worked on a doctorate degree at Gettysburg.
He served as pastor at Presbyterian churches, including Central Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg from 1957 to 1984 and Camp Hill Presbyterian Church from 1984 until his retirement in 1990. He served as interim pastor of Middlespring Presbyterian Church from 1990 to 1992.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Carlisle Presbytery in Carlisle, Pa. He was a member of Chambersburg Council of Churches, the Mental Health Board of Chambersburg, and had been a member of Chambersburg Rotary Club and Cumberland Valley Torch Club.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Arndt May; four daughters, Kathleen Hartzok of Chambersburg, Rebecca Salerno of Damascas, Md., Amy Snider of Gaithersburg, Md. and Meg Ann Hobbs of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; one sister, Myra Pifer of Camp Hill; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg. The Revs. C. Edward Morgan, Richard Schellhase, Linda B. Harter and James Brown will officiate. Private burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery in Chambersburg prior to services.
