Funeral services for Gilbert Allen, 89, of Neligh, were held Monday, June 14, at the United Methodist Church in Neligh. the Rev. Kay Alnor officiated.
Burial was in the Laurel Hill Cemetery at Neligh with arrangements by Beyer Funeral Home of Neligh.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Todd Weinrich, Travis Weinrich, Justin Grebe, Bryce Grebe, Jeremy Hanson. Grandsons Trevor Hanson, Jared Hanson and Tate Weinrich were honorary pallbearers.
Gilbert Russell Allen, son of Arthur and Josephine (Nagel) Allen, was born August 22, 1914, at his Grandmother Nellie Nagel's home in Brunswick. He attended school at District #35 in antelope County. He lived at South Place near Brunswick until his family moved to another farm in 1919 (the old Allen Farm), then to the west coast. Mr. Allen worked as a lumberjack and truck driver before returning to the family farm in 1947. He farmed the home place and drove truck, hauling livestock to market, and selling eggs around the county, until his retirement. He became a resident of the Neligh Nursing Center in 2001.
He married EttaBelle Bryce on June 12, 1948 , at Yankton, SD.
Mr. Allen died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the Neligh Nursing Center. Preceding him in death were his parents Art Allen (1976), Josephine (1963), a son Roger Allen (1996), a granddaughter Trisha Weinrich (2000), and three brothers, Gordon Allen (2000), Walter Allen (1954), and Rolland Allen (1957).
Survivors in his wife, a son, Russell Allen of Neligh, four daughters and their husbands, Jane Weinrich of Lincoln, NE, Pauline (Polly) Allen of Pierce, NE, Barbara and Randy Murray of Warrenton, VA, and Donna and Ron Hanson of Oakdale, NE, a sister, Nell Melton of Oklahoma City, OK, two brothers, Robert (Bob) Allen of Des Monies, IA, and Richard Allen of Ceresco, NE; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
