As a lad in Maine, A. J. Blair caught the California gold fever and boarded the 1200 ton "Zouave" as a cabin boy. They sailed to San Francisco via Cape Horn. When he arrived he was 2nd officer.

From San Francisco he went to Nevada in search of gold during the Comstock mining days at Virginia City. He then went to Pioche, NV and discovered and worked the Hillside silver mine, once one of the richest in Nevada. It is said he made and lost several fortunes.

He was elected a Nevada State Senator in 1874.
