Fred F Brightenburg

Fred Franklin Brightenburg was born in Nebraska and according to WWI draft records, Fred was born Feb. 3, 1881, but on his grave marker it reads 1880 and in the 1900 census it lists Feb. 1879. In the 1900 census he was living with his widowed mother Sara and 2 brothers in Oak Township, Raymond, Lancaster County, Nebraska. He was working as a blacksmith. In the 1910 census, Fred had been married for 2 years to Cleophas and had a 9/12 mo. old son named Mark. The family was living in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska and Fred had worked part of the year doing carptentry. On the WWI Draft Registration card, in Sept 1918, Fred and family were still living in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska where he did furniture repair for Hartman Furniture Co.

In the 1930 census, Fred and his second wife Daisy (Siemsen), plus the following 11 children: from oldest to youngest, Mark F., Grace A., Joseph P., Lucile C., Mary G., Florence A., Elsie J., Virginia G., Robert P., Nellie E., and the youngest Donald K (less than a year in age) lived in the home in Glenwood, Mills, Iowa; as did a sister-in-law named Nellie V Siemsen. In the 1940 census, Fred and family were living in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa. Family members listed in the household were: Fred Brightenburg 59 & Daisy Brightenburg 39. Robert Brightenburg 15, Nellie Brightenburg 12, Byron Brightenburg 8 and Rosemary Brightenburg 1.

According to the World War II registration card, Fred, age 61, was unemployed and living in the National Military Home in West Los Angeles, California. Grace Eby was listed as a person of contact. Fred died 30 Dec. 1954 and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Section 16.
