John R. Barlow son of the late J. H. Barlow and Lovila Lassley, of Tusten, died at the home of his brother Under Sheriff Jesse C. Barlow, Friday evening, Aug. 23d after an illness of nine days, aged 54 years. He was taken sick at White Lake on Wed. the 13th and came to the home of his brother in this village on the 21st. Cause of death was phthisis pulmonatis, contributory cause, suphysema and asthma.
Mr. Barlow was born at Narrowsburgh in 1853, and on reaching manhood took to railroading, being employed on the Erie as a fireman and later an engineer; from there he went to Denver from Leadville. Later he went to Chicago and remained several years. At one time he fired on the Monticello road when wood was used as fuel. For several seasons he ran the steam launch at White Lake and at the time of his death was employed by Mr. Miller, the liveryman.
On Aug. 8th while returning a horse to Liveryman Durland, he was injured at the Maplewood toll gate by the horse starting up while he was paying toll and his head coming in contact with the poll, cutting a large gash in the side of his face, and it is believed to have helped hasten his death.
Deceased is survived by his mother, one sister, Ms. R. H. Connor, of Wurtsboro, and one brother, Jesse, of this village. His father died in December last and a brother, Earnest, two weeks later.
The funeral was held from the Baptist church at Tusten Monday at 2 p.m., Rev. E. Laughton officiating. Interment at Tusten.
